Changes
to Management Structure
We
are delighted to announce the following
changes to our Management Structure.
Patricia Bryson, who has been with us
since 1999, has been promoted to Director
of our Ground Engineering Division.
This is a well deserved promotion which
reflects the growth and success of our
activities in this sector. Patricia has
been instrumental in the development of
the Division into a sustainable business
and we are keen to continue the expansion
both in terms of the volume and magnitude
of commissions. We believe this promotion
together with the planned increase in
staff numbers of her team will enable
this to happen.
We would also like to formally welcome
Douglas Adam to the Company. Douglas has
joined us an Associate based in the Glasgow
Office, and he will strengthen our already
formidable team.

Balornock
Bowling Club wins Civic Trust Award.…alongside Scottish
Parliament!
Balornock Bowling Club was one of only 2 Scottish projects
to win a Civic Trust Award this year, the other being the
Scottish Parliament. These awards are given to projects
in recognition of the high quality of their design and the
positive contribution that they make to the local environment.
Situated in a disadvantaged area of North Glasgow, the previous
clubhouse facilities were housed in a portacabin, however,
this has now been replaced with an elegant single storey
pavilion, designed by architects Studio Kap.
The judges commented; ‘the results are enchanting….it
is a simple idea, magnificently executed….this project
is community architecture at it's best.'
Woolgar Hunter have been involved in a number of award winning
projects with Studio Kap including; Broomhill House (Saltire
Society Commendation 2004, GIA Design Award), Glenboig Cottage,
Fintry (Saltire Society Commendation 204), Waddell House
(RIBA Regional Award 2003, GIA Design Award 2002) and MacFarlane
House (GIA Design Commendation 2002).

Refurbishment
of Alexander Greek Thomson building
Originally
designed by Alexander Greek Thomson, this Grade A Listed
building in Great Western Terrace was a former residence
of Sir William Burrell in the early 1900s. The current owner
wishes to restore the building to its original condition
for use as a private residence. The building requires substantial
structural works to restore it to its original condition.

£30m
college project secured
Woolgar
Hunter were recently successful in their bid to provide
Civil/Structural Engineering services for a major redevelopment
project at Jewel & Esk Valley College in Midlothian.
After a strict selection process, involving the Project
Manager (Mackenzie Partnership) and key personnel from the
college, we were selected along with RMJM and KJ Tait who
will form the rest of the design team.
The
£30m project will involve the redevelopment of facilities
currently provided on 2 sites, at Milton Road and at Eskbank.
Whilst it is proposed to retain both major campus locations,
major redevelopment work is proposed to bring the facilities
up to a standard that reflects the modern curriculum at
the college.
At
the Milton Road campus, it is proposed to undertake comprehensive
refurbishment and upgrading works to the existing building.
The building will be extended to provide enhanced teaching
and recreation facilities, including a new swimming pool.
The existing halls of residence will be also modernised.
At
the Eskbank campus, the existing buildings will be demolished
and rebuilt on a smaller footprint to allow the sale of
surplus land, however the building will be designed to accommodate
future expansion. A purpose built trades pavilion will also
be developed to address the critical skills shortages in
construction, electrical and automotive repairs.
In
addition to providing full civil/structural design services,
Woolgar Hunter's Ground Engineering team will be involved
in all geo-environmental aspects of the project.
We
are delighted to be involved with such an exciting project
and we are confident that the design team can provide the
college with the solutions that they require.

Construction
complete at Auchinlea
Construction is complete on a new 80,000ft2 supermarket
and 50,000ft2 retail unit for Wm Morrisson plc. on a landfill
site to the east of Glasgow City Centre . This site is was
previously occupied by Auchinlea Retail Park and a small
part of Auchinlea Park. The new supermarket includes associated
car parking, small areas of soft landscaping and a petrol
filling station. As the site consisted largely of historic
made ground, a full risk appraisal had to be undertaken
with respect to the mobility of contaminants. Woolgar Hunter
is involved in similar projects for the same client.

Woolgar
Hunter appointed on Phase 2 at Glasgow Harbour
Woolgar Hunter has been appointed as structural engineers
on the prestigious Phase 2 development at Glasgow Harbour.
The project, which is predominantly residential, allows
for the construction of five tower blocks adjacent to the
river (one at 22 storey and four at 17 storey), with a linear
block, typically 8 storey high, bounding the roadside of
the site.
The
buildings will sit on a podium below which will be a double
basement across the full footprint of the site, providing
some 800 car parking spaces. After carefully assessing several
options, the construction of the blocks will be concrete
frames with post-tensioned flat slabs to provide a minimal
structural depth to the floors, with excellent sound and
fire rating qualities.
The
podium will be a large span concrete slab to create the
car parking areas below. The building locations have been
arranged to minimise the need for transfer structure as
the site usage changes from residential to retail (on some
ground floor locations) to the double car parking decks
below.
The
lower basement will be below the water level and will be
constructed using an embedded piled wall. To the south west
and east elevations, the basement wall is formed using a
novel hybrid slurry/piled wall, whereby structural piles
are bored through an impervious slurry wall to create an
efficient and watertight structure.
