Royal
opening for Shetland Museum
The
new Shetland Museum and Archive Facility in Lerwick was
officially opened by The Prince and Princess of Wales and
the Queen of Norway on 31 st May, marking it's importance
as the first major new building on Shetland since the town
hall was opened in 1880.
The
new facility, which is contemporary and unique in it's design,
still maintains a sense of the traditional buildings on
the island. Many recycled materials including stone from
demolitions, reclaimed oak and pine and timbers from boats
were used in the construction.
The
main structure is steel framed within composite metal deck
floors and there is a large glulam timber framed boat hall,
with boats suspended on cables above the ground. The
project also involved the renovation of the adjacent Grade
C Listed Hay's Dock.
