‘Aurora' wins ‘ Commercial Development of the Year'

‘Aurora', the latest office development in Glasgow's International Financial Services District, has been awarded ‘Commercial Development of the Year' at the Property Week Scottish Property Awards.

The project involved the demolition of an existing 1960's building on Bothwell Street and the reconstruction of 180,000ft2 of ‘Grade A' office space. Occupying the entire length of a city block and 10 stories in height, the development includes two full levels of basement carparking which utilise carlifts for access.

As the Structural Engineers on the project, one of the most challenging aspects was the excavation of the basement to allow for the car park. These works were further complicated by the steep rise in Douglas Street, giving a basement excavation of some 14m at the rear of the site. Our solution was to use a full profile contiguous piled wall, which is braced in the temporary state prior, with large diameter steel tubes.
