This new purpose-built student accommodation will provide over 550 bedrooms across 12 storeys on the former site of a now demolished 1970s office building. Nearing completion on-site, when finished the development will offer luxurious communal facilities that span 16,390 sq ft, including a gym, a gaming arcade, dining spaces, and social areas.
Engineering Excellence
The structure is comprised of a concrete frame with flat slabs, minimising the structural zone at each floor level and providing the client with opportunity for future adaptation. The concrete frame and the use of pre-cast columns has sped up construction considerably, with rooms on lower levels able to proceed to fit out while higher levels are still being constructed.
Constraints were encountered with the remaining piling from the previous building. Utilising the existing piling infrastructure was explored but proved unviable, so the new building is supported on a system of large concrete piles drilled to underlying rock, positioned carefully around the historic piles.
