Woolgar Hunter provided Civil, Structural and Geo-environmental Engineering services for the £14.7million new build development of an innovative, state of the art and sector leading ASN School to provide education for pupils aged 3 to 18 years of age with severe and complex educational needs and profound medical needs.

The new school delivers educational provision for up to 44 children, comprising 8 nursery places, 18 primary places and 18 secondary places. The new facility includes the provision of a base and clinical rooms for visiting services, space to allow training events, as well as appropriate provision for a meeting room. Learning and social spaces are divided by phase of education – early years, primary and secondary. The new campus also includes a hydrotherapy pool, two general purpose rooms, a life skills area and multi-purpose hall. The NHS Child Development Centre has also been relocated within the school campus.

Engineering Excellence

The new ASN school structure is predominantly constructed in load bearing timber frame walls which contributed to a low embodied carbon outcome. The foundations consisted of a combination of reinforced and un-reinforced ground beams supported on lean mix trench fill concrete. The foundations were constructed on strong natural clay strata. The roof is similarly constructed in timber engineered posi joists which support a lightweight fully insulated hot melt membrane roof.

The civils design included a bulk earthworks balance and topography design which included acoustic bunds to the perimeter of the campus. The drainage design was detailed around the sustainable drainage system and included an attenuation pond and rain gardens which promoted a interactive biodiversity learning opportunity.
