Woolgar Hunter has provided civil, structural and geo-environmental engineering services on the design of this new build ten-storey steel framed commercial building on Cadogan St in central Glasgow. Home to the Cadworks development, the facility will be the first and only Net Zero office building in Scotland, providing highest quality office space that can be easily tailored to tenants’ needs, while maintaining top sustainability credentials. Health and wellbeing of office users has been central to design decisions throughout the process.

Engineering Excellence

The new structure replaces two existing buildings, and the basement has been extended to incorporate both sites. Given the basement expansion and extensive groundworks required, Woolgar Hunter’s civils and geo-environmental teams were key in the development. Located in the city’s historic merchant city, site investigation found ‘made ground’ immediately below the site, where previous structures had been erected and demolished. The basement is constructed as a reinforced concrete box forming the ground floor slab. The walls and slab are constructed with a waterproof concrete additive.

The superstructure is constructed as a steel frame from universal beams with circular cut openings acting compositely with the slab above. The floor plate is designed as long span (16m) which will provide flexibility to the tenant.
