Woolgar Hunter provided Civil, Structural and Geo-environmental Engineering services for the new £12million early years facility in the town of Calderwood. As part of West Lothian Council’s growth strategy, the town of Calderwood is undergoing a major expansion, necessitating provision of a new early years facility and associated external landscaping and infrastructure.
The new proposed two stream primary school has a capacity of 128 pupils and is a two storey building with external sports pitches, amenity spaces, car parking and in built nursery.

Engineering Excellence
Generally, the structure is steel framed with the upper floor slabs cast in situ concrete on metal deck. Large open plan community spaces and sports halls required long span structural solutions. The roof is a lightweight system supported on purlins. Foundations are constructed as traditional concrete pads built off suitable substrata, with ground bearing ground floor concrete slabs.
Based on the site topography a bulk earthworks exercise was carried out to provide level platforms for the proposed building and amenities. These works were carried out by Stirling Developments in agreement with the council, and monitored by Woolgar Hunter.
