Schools

We engineered this new high school and associated community facilities as part of a wider masterplan to regenerate brownfield sites in Craigmillar, Edinburgh. Given the site’s history, our in house geo-environmental team examined SI findings and developed a slate of remediation strategies to deal with residual contamination, liaising with council regulators for approval.

Engineering Excellence

Working with the design team, contractor and council, we undertook a feasibility study and options appraisal. This considered factors including orientation and massing, life-cycle assessment and energy consumption, planning and site earthworks. The design scheme settled upon is a split level building working in harmony with the topography of the site, and a steel framed structure with a flat precast concrete soffit ‘slimfloor’ slab, offering high flexibility and cost effectiveness. The structural design makes allowance for a planned future extension.

In our role we also worked closely with stakeholders within the council to develop a SuDS strategy and design for the school that provides not only a technically compliant solution, but one that adds value to the landscape and enhances opportunities for educational benefits.
