This new student residencies project for Soller One in conjunction with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, is located in Cowcaddens, Glasgow providing 6 storeys of accommodation beside the National Piping Centre. Historically an industrial site and former bus depot, the accommodation is configured around 2 courtyards providing 312 en-suite bedrooms with communal kitchens and living spaces.
The design proposals involved the design of a 6 storey steelwork frame with concrete metal deck floors, with cinema, gym and dining facilities located at ground floor. Clever spatial planning of the ground floor enabled the omission of transfer structure, which is a common feature where a more open spatial arrangement is required within the common areas. Due to topography of the site, the building had a split level ground and lower ground floor.

Engineering Excellence
The arrangement of the buildings allowed the integration of a varied palate of elevational materials of stonework rainscreen, metal cladding and brickwork, with external deck access for residents, on the upper floors.
Collaborating closely with all disciplines, consultants and subcontractors, has permitted the delivery of this ambitious new addition to Glasgow’s expanding student accommodation sector.
