Woolgar Hunter provided civil and structural engineering services on the development of the Eden Building, as part of the New Bailey development in Salford. The project sought to create an ultra-sustainable office building, with the highest NABERS sustainability rating of new-build development in the UK, and cloaked in the largest ‘living wall’ in Europe. The building, which provides 150,000sq ft of modern office space, has the capacity to run on 100% renewable energy.

Engineering Excellence

The ambitious carbon targets raised a range of engineering challenges, particularly in trying to meet the engineering requirements in a way that remained commercially viable. Woolgar Hunter developed bespoke vibration assessment criteria to enable testing of CLT and composite CLT flooring systems. The plant equipment necessitated by the building’s 100% renewable energy capacity and structural implications of it’s green façade - complete with 350,000 individual plants, required smart design solutions to ensure the structural framing could meet the unique requirements while remaining both carbon and cost efficient. The completed building has challenged norms of office design in Manchester both aesthetically and in showing the level of sustainability ambition that can be realised.
