Woolgar Hunter provided civil, structural and geo-environmental engineering services for a new single stream primary school and early years facility in Winchburgh, West Lothian. The new primary school provides space for 231 pupils and 42 early years places, with the ability to expand in the future if required. As part of West Lothian Council’s growth strategy, the town of Winchburgh is undergoing a major expansion, necessitating provision of new primary and secondary school facilities.
The Primary School consists of a two storey “barn” style building providing a mix of educational accommadtion – including classrooms and shared social and activity spaces – along with associated support facilities, early years learning and plant space.
Engineering Excellence
Generally the structure consists of a steel frame, with the upper floor slabs cast in situ concrete on metal deck. The barn style structure enables large open spaces within the sports and dining area and is sub-divided within the teaching and learning areas. The roof consists of a lightweight structural system supported on purlins. The foundation system involves “traditional” concrete pads built directly onto the rock shelf, the ground floor slab is “ground bearing” cast on engineered fill above rock level.
Given the existing topography, a bulk earthworks enabling exercise was required to create a level platform for the proposed development. This work was undertaken by Winchburgh Developments in agreement with the council, and monitored by Woolgar Hunter.
