Sector:
The PSS project located at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee provided a new facility to manufacture and supply special and one-off prescriptions to patients throughout the whole of Scotland. The building accommodates production spaces, quality control laboratories and non-graded areas including warehouse, storage and office accommodation.
Due to the tightly controlled manufacturing conditions, this highly serviced building required close collaboration between the design team and contractor to establish the most appropriate services strategy. The building comprises a two-storey duo-pitch form with all clean rooms on the ground floor with services suspended above from a first floor steelwork grillage and access walkways.
Engineering Excellence
The primary structure comprises an efficient braced steel frame with composite metal decking flooring. Through discussions with the architect a structural grid was developed to suit the building envelope and internal room layouts with columns carefully positioned to be located within wall build ups.
The existing site slopes considerably with the proposed building levels carefully considered to minimise cut and fill and retention on the site. The building comprises a basement to the rear with the structural design comprising RC retaining walls stepped to suit the changing levels. The foundations for the building comprise traditional pad footings with trench fill to weathered rock bearing strata. A perimeter ground beam was adopted to minimise the amount deep excavation required across the site.
