The old Olympia Theatre at Bridgeton Cross, Glasgow has been redeveloped as the centre piece of the regeneration of Bridgeton Cross. The original Listed sandstone façade was retained with a new four storey steel frame construction behind. The building houses a library and office space together with a sports hall and administrative offices for elite athletes in boxing and wrestling.

Engineering Excellence

The steel frame has long span floors and particular consideration was taken with respect to acoustics and floor dynamic response with regard to the different uses of each storey, particularly as the sports facility is on the first floor above the library. The sports facility is double storey in height.

Temporary façade retention was required to allow the existing building to be demolished prior to the new structure being ‘tied back’ to the existing façade. The building is located adjacent to the low level ‘Argyle Line’ railway tunnel which passes below Bridgeton Cross. The piled foundations and substructures have been carefully designed to respect the tunnel, following detailed liaison with Network Rail.
