Woolgar Hunter are providing civil and structural engineering services as part of an ongoing redevelopment of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital Campus to provide new, high quality healthcare facilities.

Our initial involvement was to develop an engineering strategy to inform and respond to a masterplanning exercise for the campus. This included undertaking a geo-environmental appraisal of the site and consideration of site constraints and opportunities. Our geo- environmental team liaised closely with our civil engineers to develop a coherent and integrated engineering strategy for the site, bringing together levels, earthworks, and drainage design considerations alongside ground conditions. Much of this work informed the design of Phase 1 of the re- development and contributed to successful delivery of this phase on time and on budget, in December 2016.

Engineering Excellence

As part of our ongoing involvement, Woolgar Hunter has also undertaken an appraisal of MacKinnon House, which is the oldest surviving building within the hospital campus, dating from c.1840. This Grade B listed building currently provides various accommodation, but due to the nature of the building this is somewhat outdated and significant structural interventions are required in order to provide more flexible space.

We are currently engaged in early design work for the next phase of re-development and this will also involve updating the original masterplan taking account of changing healthcare requirements.
