Woolgar Hunter has been appointed as the civil and structural engineer on the refurbishment and vertical extension of the Rylands Building in Manchester.
Originally constructed as a textile storage warehouse for the Rylands family between 1928-1932 it was quickly repurposed and used as a department store before being sold to Debenham’s in the 1970’s.

Engineering Excellence
The building was recently sold to AM Alpha Holdings and is due to be submitted for planning. The refurbishment includes the introduction of a central atrium and the restoration and strengthening of the existing frame to support an additional 4 storeys of office space.
The planning permission will include stringent criteria associated not only with its Grade 2 listed heritage status but also the development is aiming to achieve a low carbon status as part of the refurbishment.
