Woolgar Hunter has been appointed as the civil and structural engineer on the refurbishment and vertical extension of the Rylands Building in Manchester.

Originally constructed as a textile storage warehouse for the Rylands family between 1928-1932 it was quickly repurposed and used as a department store before being sold to Debenham’s in the 1970’s.

Engineering Excellence

The design proposed involves the redevelopment of the full city block, and complete refurbishment of the building, bringing it back to life with an arcade at the ground floor and with new office space above. Each floor plate is over an acre in area; the entire gross building floor area is over 500,000 ft2.

Four new levels of office floor are being added and a new atrium carved out of the existing building. Two new internal cores are to be formed, and the entrances are to be reconfigured providing access on all four sides. The new development will bring back a key piece of the city centre in a low carbon intervention.
