The University of Strathclyde purchased the former Maternity Hospital at Rottenrow in 2001 and transformed the site into green space at the centre of the University to provide a central meeting space and venue for outdoor social events.

Engineering Excellence

The very steeply sloping site required numerous retaining walls and terracing. Woolgar Hunter was an integral part of the multi disciplinary team which delivered a high-quality development which transformed the University Campus.

The gardens also feature a ‘Monument to Maternity’, a seven-metre high stainless steel sculpture in the form of a giant nappy pin, designed by Sculptor, George Wylie. The Development achieved a commendation in the Scottish Design Awards in 2004.
