HFD Group began construction in June 2017 of a new high pressure multiphase flow test facility in the Scottish Enterprise Business Park at East Kilbride. The facility is occupied by TUV-NEL, a flow measurement R&D specialist providing fluid flow technical services to the global oil and gas market.
This facility’s test range capability goes beyond anything currently available in the world. Operating at pressures up to 150 bar, this will double current capabilities to replicate extreme production conditions. The facility occupies 1,600m2, and contains a £145m full production scale separator with an operating weight of 400 tonnes.
Engineering Excellence
The new project provides world-leading pressure testing and flow measurement facilities in a tall portal framed steel structure. The building required the installation of two 10 tonne cranes running the full 80m length of the building to allow the installation to the test facility equipment as well as allowing for future maintenance and operations.
The cranes required to be supported on guide rails on the portal sitting at around 12m from finished floor level. Due to the strict deflection and tolerances for the crane operation, careful consideration was given to the building movements during the operation of the crane with also considering environmental effects such as wind and temperature variations.
