Woolgar Hunter has provided engineering services on the development of the masterplan for a major new housing development in Leith. Planning to deliver more than 900 new residential units on the waterfront, across a number of medium rise apartment blocks, complete with a raised garden deck, internal courtyard and parking below.
Engineering Excellence
Given its location, the site posed significant challenges, with large amounts of reclaimed land requiring significant earthworks to stabilise them. A piling solution and suspended concrete slab were utilised for the substructure, while a single storey podium deck superstructure transfer’s the load of the upper floors to outer columns, allowing for open layout retail units on the ground floors.
Following construction of the initial group of apartments, the rest of the masterplan has begun to roll out and has developed with shifting priorities. In particular, an enhanced focus on sustainability, with a reduction in the number of parking spaces, an increase in EV charging infrastructure and the inclusion of a ‘Go Green Hub’ residents’ centre.
