Woolgar Hunter provided civil and structural engineering services for the refurbishment of the iconic Paul Waterhouse designed Category B-listed landmark 1828 building. The works included alterations and an extension to the existing basement to accommodate new plantrooms and a chair lift to the main hall. These provided a design challenge to provide a constructable solution that took cognisance of the existing building foundations and superstructure.

Engineering Excellence

Woolgar Hunter worked closely with the main contractor to suitably survey each area of structure, in order to develop sequences of work to carry out excavations and subsequent structural works safely within the enclosed spaces. Further complex structural works were required to ensure that the existing structure was suitably supported both in the temporary and permanent conditions.

An extension was constructed to form a new entrance to the building, comprising of a steel frame. Woolgar Hunter worked closely with the architect and used our knowledge of the existing structure and building façade to coordinate the design of the extension foundations and superstructure, which included a stone façade to reflect the architecture of the existing building.
