Cherryhill, Larkhall
Muse Developments delivered this large site in Larkhall with an ASDA supermarket as the anchor development, and other retail opportunities in the residual platforms. The site was complex in several respects: having comprised a pronounced valley on the edge of Larkhall’s coal fields, which needed up to 5m of structural up fill along with the diversion of a watercourse; and being located in an archaeologically sensitive area.

Our civil and geo-environmental engineers became involved at the earliest stages, undertaking their usual desktop studies and ground investigations, using the findings to develop designs as well as preparing input to the Environmental Impact Assessment that was a planning requirement.
Designing suitable platforms for the site and associated drainage was a critical part of the project given the scale of the earthworks and the fact that the soils needed to be treated by lime modification to allow placement as a structural fill. 3-D earthwork modelling was essential to maximise the re-use of site-won soils.
Underground mining is endemic in Larkhall and our geologists played a key role in assessing the risk to the proposed development from the various coal seams. Mining constraint plans were prepared to guide both the main ASDA development and the surrounding area.
Our drainage specialists prepared the Controlled Activities licence application and supporting technical documents for the culverting and diversion of the watercourse.
